Could Autonomous School Buses Get Kids Safely To School?

A design concept from Teague gives the yellow school bus an update with an autonomous driving AI

With the discussion of how to best integrate self-driving vehicles to roads and daily life, design firm Teague wanted to present a concept for how autonomous technology could work for school buses. Teague calls its conceptual vehicle Hannah, and the design completely rethinks the traditional school bus. Instead of a large vehicle designed to hold 40 to 50 students, each Hannah would serve six students by picking them up and dropping them off directly in front of their homes.

Prior to the student entering or exiting the the vehicle, the outside door uses a facial recognition software to verify the student’s identity. To get students where they need to be on time, Hannah’s AI recognizes traffic reports and adjusts its course to proceed down the quickest routes as they change.

Autonomous vehicles, of course, still have a ways to go before they’re ready for every road—and before parents will trust them with their children.
