Facebook Has Launched A Version Of Messenger For Children

A new messaging app on the social platform creates an age-appropriate environment for kids to chat, after approval from their parents

Facebook released a new version of its Messenger app designed for children from ages 6 to 12. Due to federal law, those under the age of 13 cannot create a Facebook account. However, this new app bypasses this rule because children using it do not have to make one.

The service gets set up through a parent’s account, where the parent chooses who may speak to their child through the app. In the Messenger Kids app, children have access to video and text chats, with kid-appropriate GIFs. The parents must download the app first and connect it to their account prior to setting up their child’s. Other relatives who wish to speak to a child must also download the app and connect their account. The parent must approve the contact before they can start a conversation with the child.

Facebook launched Messenger Kids on Monday.
