The service is a part of the company’s mission to improve working life for deaf drivers

International ride sharing company Uber has launched a new website that will teach people phrases in American Sign Language to better communicate with drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing. The service is a part of the company’s mission to recruit more drivers from the deaf community, and to make interactions with non-deaf customers as smooth as possible.

Uber says it currently employs deaf drivers in more than 200 U.S. cities and around the globe, and that deaf drivers have completed over one million trips. The company first introduced a number of features to better serve deaf drivers and their customers in 2015, like providing visual rather than audio notifications for drivers when they have a new trip request. Customers are also informed ahead of time that their driver is deaf, letting them use text messages to communicate any questions instead of voice.

By visiting ubersignlanguage.com, riders can pick up a few simple phrases in American Sign Language (ASL), like “hello,” “thank you,” “hi, my name is,” or directional phrases like “turn left,” “turn right” or “stop here.”
