Chargers will be located at shopping centers and supermarkets for convenience

Tesla has built nearly 1,000 charging stations for its fleet of electric cars across North America, but has thus far stayed clear of major cities. With the development of a new, more compact charger, however, Tesla says this is about to change.

The car company announced this week that it plans to begin setting up charging stations in major cities across the U.S., starting with downtown Chicago and Boston. These charging stations would be located conveniently at supermarkets, shopping centers and other downtown attractions so that Tesla drivers can easily charge their cars while they run other errands or enjoy leisure activities.

Superchargers in urban areas will have a new design that occupies less space and is easier to install, making them ideal for dense, highly populated areas. The tradeoff is that they are slightly less powerful than Superchargers found on highways, delivering about 72 kilowatts compared to 120 kilowatts in existing models. This means charging will take longer (45-50 minutes for most drivers) although the price will remain the same, about 10-20 cents per charging minute, depending on which model Tesla you have.

Tesla drivers can, of course, charge their cars at home, the challenge is driving long distances without a charge, which is why Tesla has thus far focused on popular long-distance routes. The move to city centers, however, presents a whole new opportunity for the company to reach urban drivers who currently have scant charging options.
