Mercedes Partnership Brings 3-Word Addresses To Car Navigation

what3words and Daimler partnered to bring the simplified global addressing system to voice-activated vehicle GPS

what3words has partnered with Daimler to integrate its global addressing system with Mercedes-Benz’s built-in vehicle navigation. Currently available as a free app for mobile, what3words assigned a unique three-word address to every three-meter square on the planet. Drivers will be able to use them to navigate directly to a building entrance or specific parking lot, and to locations that lack traditional street addresses.

Mercedes-Benz is the first automaker to incorporate what3words into its vehicles. Users will be able to type or say a three-word destination, and what3words will convert it into a GPS coordinate for the car’s navigation system. The companies say this new ability will vastly improve the accuracy and efficiency of voice commands, making it much more difficult for the machine to misunderstand and bring a user to the wrong location.

“Traditional street addresses just were not built for voice input,” Chris Sheldrick, co-founder and CEO of what3words, said in a company statement. “15 Ammanford Road and 50 Ammanford Road are hard for a voice system to distinguish between, and many house names and road names aren’t unique. There are 14 different Church Roads in London and 632 Juarez Streets in Mexico City. Street addresses also use thousands of non-dictionary words, the pronunciation of which can be near impossible to guess. The town of Godmanchester is actually pronounced ‘Gumster.’”

On top of voice navigation, what3words counts among its use cases everything from finding friends at a music festival to locating people in remote areas who need medical services. Watch what3words CCO Clare Jones deliver her PSFK 2017 keynote in the video below.
