It was the world’s first photography show where a car was used as a camera

Volvo collaborated with three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and artist Barbara Davidson who used a new XC60 crossover to create a collection of 30 photographs. Davidson used the XC60’s onboard pedestrian and cyclist detection cameras to capture street photography around the city of Copenhagen. It is the first time a collection of work has been created by a photographer using a car’s onboard cameras as their only equipment.

Davidson first exhibited the photo collection at Canvas Studios gallery in London’s Shoreditch. The exhibition is scheduled to travel to other countries for showings throughout 2017.

As former staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times newspaper, Davidson said he has first hand experience with the robust safety features for which Volvo is historically known and continues to advance today.

“I have a very personal connection with Volvo Cars. When I was a teenager I was involved in a serious road accident where the car flipped over which, in normal circumstances, would probably have proven fatal. I was told later that I had survived because of the car I had been traveling in – a Volvo,” she said.

Her experience led to wanting to find a way to share Volvo’s safety story with more people.

“With this project we connect art and safety for people to see the benefits of this technology,” she said.

Volvo has improved the Steer Assist system on the XC60 to automatically take over to help avoid collisions in city environments with pedestrians and cyclist, along with other oncoming motorists and vehicles that might be in a driver’s blind spot.
