A new app for iPhone users describes objects and reads text in the world using the phone’s camera

A new application developed by Microsoft helps the blind and partially sighted better navigate the world around them by using an iPhone camera. The Seeing AI app narrates information regarding objects at which the user points with their iPhone. The app’s software identifies items in the environment and their distance from the phone, and reads aloud any words it finds.

Seeing AI also identifies friends recognized on a saved database, by saying their names, whether they look happy or sad, and their distance from the user. If the app is unable to recognize something due to the way the camera is positioned, it informs the user and tells them which direction to move the phone.

iPhone users in the United States can download Seeing AI from Apple; however, Microsoft did not release any details as to when it would be made available for other countries and devices.
