Subscription Service Lets Cyclists Swap Their Bike When It Breaks

A new bicycle service in the Netherlands keeps cyclists going, replacing a stolen or damaged bike within 12 hours

Cyclists in the Netherlands have access to a new bicycle subscription service called Swapfiets. The service costs €15 per month and gives subscribers a bicycle, a lock, insurance on the bike and access to a support team who can take care of mechanical issues. If the bicycle gets damaged or stolen, the service replaces the bike within 12 hours. All of the bicycles used in the subscription service have a distinguishing blue front tire.

Swapfiets was created by three students who started with 30 bikes, but the service now operates in nine different cities in the Netherlands with over 5,000 bicycles in their fleet. Students who sign up receive a discount.
